The Truth about Sedation Dentistry

Some people hear the words sedation dentistry and think the worst. The truth is that this aid for dentists is very beneficial for the dentist and the patient. Sedation dentistry entails an anesthesiologist placing an IV in the patient’s vein, followed by a small amount of sedation. The type of sedation and the amount are not dangerous as some people may fear. The drugs used go to work quickly so that the dentist can do the procedure as quickly and efficiently as possible without causing pain or anguish for the patient. The patient is completely relaxed and while not aware, is not completely asleep during the procedure. With close monitoring throughout, the dentist will finish the work and when completed, the IV is removed and the patient awakens. There are many reasons why sedation during dentistry is beneficial but for patients who are getting more than one procedure or extensive work done, it is highly recommended.
